- Title
WORKING WITH IMMIGRANT WOMEN: GUIDELINES FOR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.
- Authors
Guruge, Sepali; Collins, Enid; Bender, Amy
- Abstract
The article discusses guidelines Canadian mental health professionals should follow when working with female immigrants. Immigrants to Canada face a large number of culture barriers which prevent them from receiving adequate mental health services, which ultimately leads to a relatively large deterioration in immigrant mental health. Racism, sexism and social isolation also affect the mental health of female immigrants. The author suggests Canadian mental health professionals receive education in dealing with culturally diverse populations, recognize factors such as pre-migration trauma that might affect immigrant mental health, and call for an increased focus on women in government immigration policy.
