Daniels, Bruce A.
- Abstract
This article focuses on the use of natural substance for reducing atherosclerosis risk. Recent insights into the basic mechanisms involved in agerelated changes and atherogenesis indicate that deleterious alterations in the physiology of the arterial endothelium, also referred to as endothelial dysfunction, represent a key early step in the development of atherosclerosis. hs-CRP is a widely accepted marker of endothelial inflammation; it is known to decrease NO levels, thereby promoting endothelial inflammation. Approximately half of the study subjects' values for LDL cholesterol were above the normal range throughout the study, with the healthy-subject and PAOD groups showing a slight mean increase throughout the study.
