- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the artistic career of the 20th-century American muralist Thomas Hart Benton, his public popularity, and his social agency. Details are given contextualizing Benton's work within the 1920s Regionalist movement and discussion is offered analyzing how Benton's works engaged with political and social action through his depiction of U.S. culture and history. Particular attention is given to ways in which Benton used controversial depictions to question dominant ideas of social history.
