- Abstract
The article explores depictions of masculinity and rescue in U.S. war narratives. The author reflects on the gender boundaries implicit in the case of U.S. Private First Class (PFC) Jessica Lynch and her depiction in the mass media as a combat hero. Emphasis is given to artistic representations of the Vietnam War in films such as "Full Metal Jacket" by Stanley Kubrick and books such as "We Were Soldiers Once...And Young" by Harold Moore and Joe Galloway. Other topics include the gendered aspects of fuel consumption, the film "We Were Soldiers" starring Mel Gibson, and the trope of captured females in U.S. culture.
