- Abstract
The article focuses on fresh food vending trends and practices in the U.S. The National Restaurant Association and the National Automatic Merchandising Association both have recognized the importance of offering healthy food choices for consumers whether served at a table or through a vending machine. The fresh food vending industry generates $1.5 billion in sales each year in the United States. In order to increase profitability and improve market share for vending operators it is important to understand the implications of effective fresh food vending. Also important is a better understanding of the relevance of the route driver on the overall fresh food vending operation. The driver can be considered the sole owner of a vending machine, and as such is in charge of fresh food rotation and for the safe handling of the food products. Consideration of these factors would help the food service industry and vending operators to increase profits and provide better product choices to consumers.
