- Title
INSIDE THE COMMONS TREASURY COMMITTEE: THE REPORT ON THE CIVIL SERVICE.
- Authors
Mitchell, Austin
- Abstract
The article presents a Member of the Parliament's (MPs) narrative on the process and progress of the report of the sub committee of the Commons Treasury Committee on civil service. The article enumerates the problems seen by the author as the reduction in the number of civil servants, the end of the established pay arrangements, and the Government Communications Head Quarters (GCHQ) trade unions affair and frequent criticisms of the service by its political leaders. The report met criticisms and rejections by several members particularly the Conservatives who viewed it as against their principle. The article concludes that the rejection of the report by a government committed to a more efficient civil service under firmer ministerial direction is surprising.
