- Abstract
The article looks at the history of Uyghur women in the Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang) of the People's Republic of China (PRC). According to author, this subject has received insufficient scholarly attention and is relevant to contemporary political and societal issues. Particular focus is given to the legendary Uyghur figure Iparhan, women's roles during the republican era, and Uyghur businesswoman Rebiya Kadeer. Details related to differing Chinese and Uyghur accounts of Ipharhan's life are presented. Other topics include archival materials, marriage and divorce in Uyghur communities, and sex roles.
