- Abstract
Background: Vaccination is the intervention that causes the most pain experienced by healthy babies. Vaccine injections administered without pain control cause intense stress and anxiety in infants and parents. Objectives: The study was conducted in a randomized controlled type in order to determine the effect of the maternal holding method on the pain level and crying time during Hepatitis B vaccine administration in infants older than 1 month. Methods: The research data were obtained from infants who applied to a family health center for the administration of the second dose of Hepatitis B vaccine. The data were collected using “Information Form”, “Newborn Infant Pain Scale (NIPS)”. Mann Whitney U, Spearman Correlation, Fisher’s Exact and Chi-Square tests were used to analyze the data. Results: It was determined that infants in the control group (get vaccinated at the examination table) during and after the vaccination process (6.52±0.77 points; 2.73±1.18 points) experienced more pain than maternal holding group (4.35±0.97 points; 0.92±1.10 points) (p<.001). It was found that infants in the control group cried more during the procedure (27.46±10.13 seconds) than infants in the maternal holding group (17.46±4.75 seconds)(p <.001). Conclusion: It was found that the maternal holding was an effective method to reduce the pain and crying time of infants during vaccine administration. During vaccination applications, it is important to inform nurses in order to spread vaccination in the mothers holding instead of vaccination on the examination table in order to reduce the pain and crying time of infants.
