- Abstract
The article discusses the Brisbane Supreme Court trial of Doctor Jayant Patel who was charged with three counts of manslaughter for the death of patients and 10 charges of bodily harm on patients at Bundaberg Base Hospital. The first recorded case of manslaughter was reportedly the case of Dr. Valentine on January 7, 1842 while only two cases were filed from 1970-89 and in 1990-99 there were 13 cases filed. Also noted is the significance of the Patel trial outcome to the approach of Australian court regarding medical manslaughter.
