- Abstract
Nursing home residents in the severe stage of dementia were involved in Snoezelen sessions, and the daily care staff observed treatment effects from these sessions. However, useful information is difficult to find among the enormous amount of text data in case records written following the sessions, which limits a full comprehension of the tangible effects of Snoezelen. To obtain a better understanding of the treatment effects of Snoezelen sessions, a case record was analyzed retrospectively using text mining. Text mining is known as one kind of data mining. The patient in the examined case was a woman in her eighties who had been diagnosed with severe dementia. The text data from her case record were visualized using bar graphs and network diagrams. The results indicated that the frequency of neutral/positive words was predominantly higher than that of negative words. The neutral/positive words were associated with engaging in an occupation and behavior of well-being. Moreover, the higher score on the volition questionnaire reflected the state of well-being achieved through the engagement of an occupation in Snozelen session. Sharing the extracted information with care staff was the first step in incorporating Snoezelen as part of dementia care at the nursing home.
