- Title
Occurrence and Fate of the Phytotoxin Juglone in Alley Soils under Black Walnut Trees.

- Abstract
This article discusses the degradation of Juglone a naturally occurring phytotoxic chemical released by black walnut trees. The soil beneath walnut trees was analyzed for possible toxicity to alley cropping systems. According to the authors, the soil extracts exceeded the lowest solution culture toxicity levels in some plants. However, the concentrations of Juglone did not exceed the inhibition thresholds for maize and soybeans. They concluded that while Juglone is degraded by microbial and abiotic processes, it may accumulate enough in low fertility soil to be of concern in agroforestry systems.
