- Title
Illuminaten in den USA? Über Plausibilitäten, transatlantische Netzwerke und die Rezeption einer Verschwörungstheorie des späten 18. Jahrhunderts.
- Authors
Oberhauser, Claus
- Abstract
The article by Claus Oberhauser examines the reception history of the anti-Illuminati conspiracy theory in the USA. The focus is on the sermons of Jedidiah Morse, which warned of the danger of infiltration of the USA by the Illuminati. Morse and his conservative transatlantic network tried to create plausibilities by presenting ever new evidence of an alleged conspiracy. The article also emphasizes the connection between conspiracy thinking and revolutionary perspectives during the French Revolution. Christoph Daniel Ebeling played a decisive role in the transatlantic networks and criticized Robison's book "Proofs of a Conspiracy". The reception of John Robison's work extended to popular culture, as in the trilogy "Illuminatus!" by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.
