- Title
ADVANCES IN MEASURING AND UNDERSTANDING MARINE PRIMARY PRODUCTION.
- Authors
Nielsen, E. Steemann
- Abstract
The article discusses recent advances in measuring and understanding marine primary production. It explains that the rate of primary production in the sea and in fresh water has been investigated to some extent by other techniques that involve the measurement of the rate of productivity by following either the total content of carbon dioxide or oxygen in the water masses throughout the day. Aside from the carbon technique, the article also discusses the chlorophyll technique, which was originally used for estimating the biomass of phytoplankton. It also presents a background of primary production with special consideration of the light factor.
