- Authors
VILLALÓN, MARÍA EUGENIA DE LUNA
- Abstract
In this paper the author examines literacy practices as a religious popular votive manifestation called exvotos, carried out by the Catholic faithful to ask or thank a saint, a virgin or a Christ in particular for a specific favor or miracle. Through a study with an ethnographic approach, exvotos samples were collected, the catholic faithful and producers were interviewed in order to analyze, describe and explain later the use of reading and writing as a social and cultural practice in this type of votive manifestation. Through pictorial and written narratives included in the exvotos herein studied, it is possible to analyze the use of reading and writing not only in a specific time, but throughout time, and to explain how social and cultural elements are intertwined to understand the use of language, habits and customs of a society historically and geographically located.
