- Abstract
Introduction Social entrepreneurship is an increasing concept in recent years and draws attention as an old research area. Social entrepreneurship, while taking place in entrepreneurship concept and focusing social properties and social benefit of entrepreneurship, has nowadays improved samples both in Turkey and in the World. Social entrepreneurship is also seen as a mean of change and development because of the increasing social problems and inadequacy for the public to overcome these needs. Associated with resolving the social problems, social entrepreneurs provide transformation for the education, health, environment, human rigths and development initiatives. For this reason, social entrepreneurs are characterised as transformation agents who have social mission to pursue the new opportunitiesandinnovation. Social entrepreneurship is blended with the characteristics of business entrepreneurship such as risk taking, innovation and profit making. But creating economic value is a secondary element that provides financial sustainability for social entrepreneurs. Although they resemble commercial entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs are defined as those who have the sense of social responsibility using entrepreneurial capacities to solve social problems. In addition, social entrepreneurs is described as having suffered in the past and suffering from negative incidents. It is important to determine the characteristics of social entrepreneurs who have a significant potential for social transformation. Fromthis motivational perspective, our study examines the phenomenon of social entrepreneurhip in terms of female entrepreneurs and the profiles of female social entrepreneurs. Besides it aims to reveal whether the profiles are similar to the characteristics associated with social entrepreneurs in the literature. Methods It is seen that a significant part of the increasingly socialent repreneurs in the world and in Turkey are composed of women. In social entrepreneurship activities focusing on issues such as human rights, environment, education, poverty reduction, health and aid, female social entrepreneurs are thought to both solve problems of women and role-models for their fellow. In this respect, the study aims to examine the profiles of female social entrepreneurs who work to improve the situation of fellow with disabilities and to determine the similarities / differences of these profiles with the social entrepreneurial profile in the literature. The sample of the research is female social entrepreneurs who are the members of ASHOKA that are the world's first and largest network of social entrepreneurs and established to help social entrepreneurs in the world. The data has been obtained from ASHOKA web site and other internet sources related to this web site. Finally content analysis method was used to analyze the obtained data. Findings 8 female social entrepreneurs are detected working in ASHOKA Turkey to improve the rights of women. This number constitutes 20% of the total number of members. Half of the female social entrepreneurs examined were born in eastern of Turkey. All of the sample is literate and 7 of the 8 women were got educated in high school and above. It is observed that half of the female social entrepreneuls are trained in occupations such as teaching and social work specialization. It can be expressed that persistence, Collective leadership, awareness, tenacious, social responsibility, energetic, innovative, creativity, struggle, consciousness, self-confidence, empathy are the common characteristics of the mentionedfemale social entrepreneurs. It can be emphasized that mentioned female social entrepreneur have experienceddifferent traumas about themselves or their families in their past. It is seen that social entrepreneur female have established their institutions in 1986-2006. In that regard it can be stated that women's educational problems, violence and exposure to abuse, discrimination, in capacity to work, poverty, migration from rural to urban areas and terror are common conditions that cause these institutions to emerge. In addition many of these female social entrepreneurs who were engaged such activites to improve the rights of women were rewarded for their work before ASHOKA Conclusion When examined the profiles of female social entrepreneurs constituting the sample of the research, it seems difficult to classify them in area ssuch as place of birth, education and occupation. Female social entrepreneurs also have common characteristics of social entrepreneurship as stated in the literature. Although they have experienced similar negativities incidents and traumas in their past, female social entrepreneurs have not the same the career stages. However, it can be said that female social entrepreneurs who constitutes our sample had experienced similar negative personal incidents in their past as emphasized in the literature That'swhy since the study is conducted on a limited sample, the obtained information is limited to the sample. Differing results can be obtained by conducting more extensive studies to determine the profiles of female social entrepreneurs and, in particular, their personal experiences.
