- Abstract
Studies comparing former US President Donald Trump to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have been published in the scholarly literature in the general context of the emergence of right-wing populist leaders and the social repercussions of this. Several parallels between the two politicians can be seen, depending on the researchers’ areas of interest. The current study is a component of this collective effort, but it adopts a novel tack by emphasizing the distinctions between Trump and Bolsonaro. Their personal trajectories, the social framework in which they are located, and their relationships with the media are all examined in three different ways to examine these differences. To build the work, bibliographical research was done to create, for each of them, a narrative that adds details to the discussion. Following a summary of the study’s findings, they are compared. The study enables us to make several observations, including the following: the vast differences in the social backgrounds in which the politicians grew up help to understand some communicative differences between them; the relationship with religion appears to have more of a strategic component in Trump than in Bolsonaro; the Brazilian is more capable of self-deprecating humor and fears ridicule less than the American.
