- Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine the new graduate military doctors‟ reasons for the choice of medical training and military medical school. The factors affecting this choice and career expectations are also presented. MATERIAL AND METHOD The survey including questions about choosing medical training and military medical school, and career expectations implemented to 58 trainee doctors graduate from Gulhane Military Medical Academy. RESULTS: Military medical faculty was the first preference of 79.3% (n = 46) doctors at the university entrance exam and this was 87.9% (n = 51) for the first three preferences. When compared the reasons for choosing medical faculty, 56.9% (n = 33) of doctors expressed job guarantee, 44.8% (n = 26) expressed having better educational opportunities but only 17.2% (n = 10) expressed a high-income profession. For the choosing military medical school, 63.8% (n = 37) of doctors‟ reason was “dignity of being military doctor” and of 55.2% (n = 32) was “being military medical faculty more respectable”. Of 22.4% (n = 13) choose for good social facilities because of their low income, housing etc. Career expectations were as 87.9% (n = 51) of doctors want to be specialist and only 1.7% (n = 1) do not. CONCLUSION: Approximately 90% of doctors choose military medical faculty in the first three preferences and respectability of being military doctor and educating in military medical school are very effective for these choices. Contrary to expectations, being high-income profession and choosing for good social facilities was observed at the low rate.
