- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to define and analyze the basic epidemiological characteristics of burn patients operated in our deparment patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective data of burn patients treated at Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment-Varna, in the period: January 2005 - December 2011, was analyzed and statistically interpreted in terms of age, gender, annual distribution of burn, percentage of total body surface area (TBSA%), depth of burn, anatomical site, type of burn and surgery, mortality rate. The extracted clinical data was processed with the statistical package IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0. RESULTS: A total of 1560 burn patients, mean age 52.9±18.54 (ranging 18-97 years) were admitted. The most affected group was over 69years (24.29%), Male were 908(58. 21%) and female 652(41.79%). During the reported period, the highest number of patients was registered in 2008- 294 (18.85%) cases. The mean total burn surface area (TBSA) was 10.48%. The commonest depth of burn was second degree (58.46%), followed by third degree (41.54%). Arm (77.37%) and lower leg (74.87%) were the mainly affected area. Flame were the most frequent burn (31,99%), followed by scalds (23.78%), and hot hot water (19.29%). Total mortality rate was 4.55%. CONCLUSION: This study provides useful information that will support and facilitate preventive work and educational programs for the population.
