- Abstract
The role of grandparents and other close relatives in caring for the children of working mothers has been diminishing in modem societies everywhere including Jordan. Concurrently, the dependence on housemaids to care for the children of working mothers has been on the rise. The impact of housemaids on young Jordanian children (4-5 years old) was investigated, with respect to both their language capability and psychological well-being. The findings indicate prevalent speech problems which can be attributed to the housemaids. Likewise, psychological problems were identified among the children, for some of whom the role of their mothers and that of their maids were not distinguishable. This paper calls for careful selection of maids, precise definition of their duties and close monitoring of their interaction with the children. Above all, it urges the mothers not to delegate certain child-caring tasks to their maids.
