- Abstract
Using a metadata approach, this article explores the history of printing, publishing, print culture and writing in Africa during the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-independence periods, particularly in areas where oral tradition held sway prior to European colonization. Topics include the history of the book, the history of writing including the hieroglyphics of Egypt, the influence of missionaries on reading and writing skills in Africa, and the creation of written native languages in Sub-Saharan Africa.
