- Abstract
While a discourse on the conceptual aspects of implementing inquiry-based learning in the classroom has developed in recent years, there is a lack of both empirical studies and a grounding of such implementation in the discourse on professional theory. This contribution presents the orientations of teachers teaching so-called research courses from an explorative perspective and discusses these orientations in the light of professional theory. The analysis of interview data with teachers from two German academic secondary schools (Gymnasien), using the documentary method, shows that the teachers seek to enable and encourage their students to undertake independent research, which is perceived as a norm in research-based learning. Different ways of structuring the teaching-learning processes are presented that refer to certainty and routines on the one hand and to uncertainty and crises on the other hand.
