- Abstract
The Historical Journal discusses the impact of the Russian aggression on historical research in Eastern Europe. It emphasizes that predicting the past is difficult and that Cold War mentalities and unresolved imperial legacies may have contributed to the war. The importance of research on Eastern Europe and the need for a critical dialogue with the public and politics are emphasized. Several internationally renowned Russian historians reject Putin's course of war and consider leaving Russia. Initiatives to support research in exile are being launched. Expertise on Ukraine has improved, but other regions and countries are neglected in the German research landscape. Access to Russian archives is important to enable a balanced analysis. The article criticizes the tendency in historical research to glorify imperialist contexts and neglect the violence and oppression of the Russian-Soviet regime. The article calls for a critical engagement with history and warns against falling for the democracy-hostile historical myths of the Putin regime. The article discusses current questions and challenges in Eastern European history in relation to the Russian aggression.
