- Abstract
The book "Noble Life in the 14th Century. Why They Traveled: The Prussian Journeys of European Nobility" by Werner Paravicini examines the living world of European nobility in the 14th century. The author argues that the desire for honor, rather than material enrichment, was the motivation for the journeys to Prussia. The book includes a literary history of the late Middle Ages and also analyzes the material foundations of the pursuit of chivalrous honor. Other motives for the journeys were family traditions, competition, imitation and fashion, as well as support from noble societies and knightly orders. The book expands and deepens the understanding of the living world of late medieval nobility.
