- Abstract
Infective endocarditis affects children and adults of all age groups and both the sexes, and it is seen worldwide. The infecting organisms have increased in number over a period of 5 decades. The main reasons for this increase are the use of indwelling catheters, central lines, prosthetic valves, devices used in the closure of congenital heart diseases, and cardiac surgery including transplantation. Availability of echocardiograms, advanced diagnostic tests like polymerase chain reaction, improved culture facilities, etc., during the past few decades, have all contributed to the improvements in diagnosis. However, still, the wide range of organisms including fungus that produces infection contributes to the mortality and morbidity. Early detection and commencement of early treatment can bring down the mortality and morbidity in infective endocarditis significantly.
