Continental Travel and the Sonnet Sequence: The Example of Robert Tofte's Laura, The Toyes of a Traveller.
- Authors
O'Brien, Robert Viking
- Abstract
The article examines the sonnet "Laura, The Toyes of A Traveler" by Robert Tofte which is associated with traveling. It notes that Laura has an Italian setting which is indicated by names of cities attached to poems including Venice, Roma and Napoli. It is stated that the sonnet's intimate connection to the sites of its conception is sequenced. It also mentions that the relationship between Tofte's sequence and Italy is emphasized in his metaphor and datelines which is also suggested by other Italian trappings. Furthermore, it cites that Tofte uses travel as much as he uses the pretence of piracy due to its indication of celestial nobility.
