- Abstract
The article offers information concerning the traditional methods of learning the ancient craft of leather tanning in Walsall. It notes that John Hagger's leather workshop encourages the ethical use of land resources and respect for the animals involved in the process, practice of the technical skills required and to leave enough knowledge to set up a small scale tannery. It notes that John also runs more courses including introduction to leather work, intermediate pattern making and construction and bridle making. An overview of the tanning process is also presented including preparation, the salting and fleshing, the de-hairing and the stretching and drying processes.
