- Abstract
This paper attempts to clarify the basis of whole language approach, by attaching special emphasis on the evolution of the term or concept `whole language` from L1 reading pedagogy to the Whole Language Approach (WLA henceforth) to ELT. With this aim in mind, related approaches, theories and methods are discussed to get better insights on the nature and composition of the whole language approach. The literature review technique, which is a qualitative technique, was used to do this study. Furthermore, the principles of whole language approach are basically summarized. Finally, the implications, advantages and drawbacks of the WLA for ELT are discussed.
