- Title
The child psychiatry pioneer who approached ADHD in a new way.
- Authors
Metcalf, Alastair
- Abstract
Sheila Metcalf, a pioneer in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry, was one of the few female Fellows at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in the 1970s. She paved the way for women in psychiatry and inspired countless women to enter the profession. Metcalf also pioneered approaches to ADHD and emphasized the importance of mental health long before it became mainstream. Her medical career spanned nearly 60 years, during which she published scholarly articles and spoke at professional conferences. Metcalf's impact on her patients was profound, as evidenced by a receptionist who said she "changed my life." She is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren.
