- Abstract
This paper examines prenatal interventions to reduce stress among women with stressful life circumstances. Electronic searches were conducted in CINAHL and PubMed for interventions which reduce stress during pregnancy. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies were categorized as abuse or risk for abuse or high levels of stress, and level of intervention. Outcomes of the interventions included decreased stress, anxiety, depression, recurrence of violence, and increased provider-patient violence-related discussions and self-esteem. Evidence suggests that individual and group level interventions may be most helpful for women who are experiencing high levels of stress. More research is needed to determine the most effective prenatal intervention program.
