- Abstract
The article analyzes the government of unpaid house and care work during the Corona pandemic in Germany from a materialist-feminist state-theoretical perspective. It is noted that the state control of care work during the pandemic exacerbates existing gender relations. The role of the state in relation to the governance of care work has been neglected in previous research. The author argues that it is the task of the state to acknowledge the unequal distribution of unpaid care work and find political solutions. The text also deals with the government's response during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on care work in the private sphere. It is pointed out that the closure of schools and daycare centers has led to an increased need for care work. However, instead of taking measures to improve state care facilities, the additional demand has been outsourced to private care arrangements. This particularly affects women and low-income single parents. The expansion of child sickness benefits is also discussed and seen as a deficit in work biographies, which can have a negative impact on the career opportunities of parents, especially mothers. Measures have also been taken to support families in recovering from the hardships of the pandemic, but these do not change the further shifting of reproductive costs and burdens onto private households, especially onto feminized individuals. The state measures lead to the privatization of care work and reinforce intersectional inequalities.
