- Abstract
Introduction: Safe blood, quality assurance, total quality management, rational and appropriate use of blood, zero risk blood transfusion are the words frequently uttered in the field of transfusion medicine and blood banking in the post AIDS era. Transmission of HIV by blood and blood products is still has very high incidence. It is about 2.11% has been given by HIV/AIDS in India 1986-2005 study. Thus it became important to know the incidence and sero-prevalence among rural and urban blood donors to control the HIV/AIDS. Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective study from January 2001 to August 2006. Blood units collected during this was 19313. Donor blood sample was tested by spot test and HIV ELISA for HIV Antibody of HIV-1 and 2. Blood Bags positive for HIV- 1 and 2 by spot test was confirmed by ELISA. Results: Total HIV-I and 2 positive Blood bags were 222 in number. Male predominates over the female donors. 214 male donors were positive for HIV-1 and 2. Only 8 females were positive for HIV- 1 and 2. Average HIV positivity was 1.1% among the blood donors. Urban donor has two times higher incidence of HIV than rural donors. Conclusions: To make strategy to control the HIV/ AIDS, one must have recognized the thrust area. Urban population are more exposed to dreaded infection than the rural population. Rural individuals who are frequently coming to town for the work should also considered as target group for the control program of HIV/AIDS.
