- Abstract
Ruth English commenced her public health work in 1957 in the Commonwealth Department of Health. Appointed chief nutritionist in 1979, she began her prodigious professional output. It was an era of growing awareness of the importance of food and nutrition in population health and exceptional activity in the sector which has not been fully sustained since. English's nature and values stood behind her many decisions. Through her pro-active secretaryship of the Nutrition Standing Committee ofthe National Health and Medical Research Council (1974-90), the work of the Nutrition Section of the Commonwealth Department of Health was supported by eminent nutritionists and dietitians across Australia. In 1993, English resigned from the public service, and undertook many significant international consultancies in Far East Asia and Oceania. She died in Noosa in October 2015 aged eighty-six, leaving an inspiring legacy in public health nutrition.
