- Abstract
This work deals with some conflicts involving communities considered as the most "traditional" ones in Maranhão State (Brazil), due the involuntary sharing of their space with a high technology complex. This situation enables some reflections about the relation between identity and territory and the impacts - in society, space and culture. There, one can observe the disruption with the "traditional" way of life and the weakening of the bind with territory, both associated with the displacement of Quilombolas communities to planned villages, often harboring people from different communities in the same space. Thus, the situation in Alcântara is proper to confront two kinds of perception of space: one, driven by the values of "modernity" and supported by government technicians; another, related to the cultural patterns of the people who are suffering with the "invasion" of their lands by a rocket launching center.
