- Abstract
In this article the life and works of prof. Zenonas Slaviūnas, a prominent Lithuanian folklorist, are reviewed. It is stressed that an important historic period of the Lithuanian folk-lore science is related with this name. From 1937 to 1973 he was the first and only scientist who thoroughly studied those spheres of the Lithuanian folk-lore which previously were studied superficially or were not studied at all, namely kanklės (a Lithuanian stringed instrument) and its music, Lithuanian folk customs and mythical images of the 16th and 17th centuries in the light of writings of Martynas Mažvydas as well as sutartinės (Lithuanian polyphonic folk songs), very unique all over Europe, which formed in the primitive society. These three studies are corner stones of the still unsurpassed allotted works of Z. Slaviūnas. He spent much time to studying Lithuanian folk choreography, family and calendar customs and interaction of literature and folk-lore.
