- Abstract
Recent studies have demonstrated the notable influence of school principals in low performing school contexts. At the same time, it is useful to be reminded that this influence encounters a number of contextually bound challenges which can be addressed in a plausible way but cannot be easily assessed empirically. Therefore, research in low performing school contexts might provide a more differentiated picture in understanding the considerable efforts of a school principal, when trying to improve the school through specific leadership strategies and actions. Consequently, by exploring two low performing schools (one rural and one urban), this study sought to investigate internal as well as external factors which might have kept these schools from achieving more successful results. First findings of our study revealed that school principals strived to screen proactively the environment of the school in order to identify professionalisation needs inside and potential support outside the schools, thus contextualising their leadership actions. Indeed, leadership consists of different, complementary strategies, which in turn are derived from the specific needs and development phase of the individual school.
