- Authors
Carmack, Noel A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the influence of folklore surrounding hidden treasure and pirate William Kidd on the Book of Mormon and other materials produced by Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter-day Saints movement. Details on the role of folk magic in treasure-seeking practices in New York and New England during the early 19th century are presented. It is suggested that place names encountered during Smith's study of accounts of Kidd may have influenced his authorship of the Book of Mormon.
