- Title
Time to improve transparency at Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
- Authors
Gagnon, Marc-André; Bacon, Marie-Hélène
- Abstract
Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has faced criticism for not releasing information about the safety of pesticides due to it being considered confidential business information. This lack of transparency contrasts with Health Canada's efforts to improve transparency for therapeutic products. The authors argue that the Minister of Health should be granted discretionary powers to make safety data for pesticides publicly available, similar to the powers granted for therapeutic products under Vanessa's Law. The authors highlight the secrecy surrounding pesticide regulation and the potential influence of the agrochemical industry on governmental institutions.
