- Abstract
This work is dedicated to the study of ekphrasis and its ideological function in the Libro de Alexandre, a Castilian clerical poem that would be the first of the works of the poetic style that modern critics identify as "mester de clerecía". Our objective will be to analyze and relate the different ekphrastic passages of the poem, both those dedicated to the description of works of art, as well as those that have places or actions with a strong visual component as their object. In particular, we will focus on the figure of Apelles, a learned artist in the service of Alexander the Great, and on his works, which are the subject of some of the most extensive and elaborate ekphrastic descriptions of the poem. To this end, we will consider the hypothesis of the reflection between Apelles and the anonymous author of the Castilian poem, proposed by Amaia Arizaleta and taken up in several later studies, to analyze what the ekphrases of the Libro de Alexandre can tell us about the conception of art and the artist, of the clergyman who composed it, and about the public to whom the poem would have been addressed.
