- Title
A (Post-) Secular Age? Religion and the Two Exceptionalisms.
- Authors
Torpey, John
- Abstract
The article discusses religion and secularism in global culture. It questions the assumption that secularization and modernization are normally connected. The widespread secularism of Europe is described as something of an anomaly, compared to the rest of the world. Conversely, the American tradition of strong religious culture combined with leading-edge modernity may also prove to be less unusual than commonly assumed. The question of whether it is even possible to consistently distinguish the secular from the religious, given the global diversity of religious beliefs and practices, is also addressed.
