- Abstract
The article illustrates the early violin and viola bowing techniques, introduced by Paul Rolland's approach to string teaching. It highlights the fundamental bow holds, which is applied in the Shadow Bowing technique. The technique is noted to be useful in isolating difficult rhythms away from the left hand as well as in aiding students to develop coordination. Also discussed is the slurred string crossing bowing technique.
