- Abstract
The article discusses the relationship between writer Jorge Luis Borges and artist Alejandro Xul Solar. According to the author, the two men shared many cultural and spiritual interests, including Kabbalah, Buddhism, and the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg and William Blake, but they drew differing conclusions from their studies. It is suggested that while Xul Solar saw knowledge and culture as a means of self-improvement, Borges valued them in and of themselves. Details on references to Swedenborg and angels in Borges's writings and Xul Solar's paintings are presented. Other topics include Blake's paintings and the role of Kabbalistic tradition in Borges's poem "The Golem".
