Herman, Bernard L.
- Abstract
The essay explores the meaning of the term "terroir" in terms of the social life and customs of the residents of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Focusing on how food is a uniting factor to residents of the area, the author considers local recipes for Drum Head Stew, Wild Bear Sandwiches, and fish stew. An interview with sisters Gertrude and Viola Bell, former Hog Island residents, about historical celebrations of the Fourth of July, is presented.
