- Abstract
The article discusses Chinese Pidgin English (CPE) in California. The origin of the dialect is linked between Chinese, Caribbean, and Pacific Island migrations. Topics covered include Pacific English pidgins, linguistic varieties, use of pronouns, and resumptive and transitive grammar in the nineteenth century Pacific. The transmission of languages in Chinese settlements in California is examined alongside language and cultural maintenance, California Chinese Pidgin English (CCPE), and American Indian Pidgin English.
