- Abstract
The use of assistive technology in the process of education and upbringing of children with disabilities in different school and extracurricular contexts is extremely important for achieving positive outcomes. Assistive technology includes means and devices, both commercially procured and modified, which are used to increase, maintain and improve the functional capacities of children with various forms and degrees of disability or developmental disabilities. Use of assistive technology, children with disabilities enables the performance of daily life activities and thus significantly contributes to the improvement of the quality of life. In addition, the use of assistive technology for children with disabilities in the educational process enables the mastery of certain academic skills, such as writing, as well as active participation in all teaching and compulsory extracurricular activities. The aim of this review paper is to analyze the application of assistive technology in children with developmental disabilities and disabilities from the aspect of motor functioning in different environments. Data were collected by searching databases and platforms, Science Direct, Oxford Academic, Google Scholar, PubMed, Taylor and Francis, as well as using data from papers from international and national scientific and professional conferences and conferences. In order for the available literature to be precisely selected, in accordance with the set subject and goal, certain search criteria are defined. The largest percentage of available literature was published in English, and the following keywords were used in the search: assistive technology, motor disorders, physical disability, children with motor disabilities, cerebral palsy, amputations, developmental coordination disorder, daily living activities as well as logical operators AND, OR and NOT. The primary criterion for selecting the studies was that the research variables indicated motor functioning and assistive technology used in children aged 6 to 12 years. All papers had to be published in full in the period from 2012 to 2021. In the realization of educational work with children with disabilities, it is extremely important to use the remaining potentials of individuals who can be used and improved to the maximum by using assistive technology, which is confirmed by the amalysis of the mentioned studies in this paper. Thus, the use of different types of assistive technologies improves different areas of motor functioning, starting from mobility through fine, manipulative activities, which contributes to achieving school achievement and encouraging the overall personality development of children with disabilities.
