- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute use of hand-made kombuchas in children with and without trisomy 21 (T21) for possible changes in bowel function. METHODS: The study was characterized as a longitudinal observational study and was carried out with 4 children who consumed kombucha for 20 days, two with T21 (4 years old boy and 9 years old girl) and two without T21 (6 years old boy and 10 years old girl). The kombucha was produced following good food handling practices, with a single fermentation, characterized as “original”, that is, without flavor. 8 mL of kombucha / body mass / day were administered, which can be consumed throughout the day. The participating families followed the children's fecal appearance, following the Bristol scale. The statistical analysis was descriptive for the evolution of the fecal aspect, using the Fisher's exact test (significant for p ≤ 0.050). RESULTS: The kombuchas did not have ethanolic residue and the parameters of national regulations were met by the experimental batch produced for the study. The girls participating in the study, showed more episodes of non-evacuation, whereas only the boy without T21 did not evacuate during chronic consumption. The boy with T21 was the one with the highest frequency of type 4 stools (considered ideal), especially after half the time. CONCLUSIONS: Although more studies are needed, the acute use of kombucha proved to be favorable in the intestinal regulation of children with and without T21, in the evaluated period.
