- Abstract
Introduction: The profile and critical competencies of the nursing professional in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are of utmost importance to guarantee specialized and quality care for critically ill newborns. Objective: Identify the profile and critical skills of nursing professionals working in the NICU. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. Nursing professionals from 4 public hospitals were surveyed; a self-administered instrument was used to assess the profile and critical competencies. Results: 147 professionals were included; 135 (91.8%; 95%CI 86.6-95.5) are women, the grouped average age up to 39 years corresponds to 48.3% (95%CI 40.3- 56.3). Training: 57.8% are nurses, the rest have postgraduate degrees; 8.2% have a postgraduate degree in critical care. Critical competencies: 63.9% - 34.7% (always-almost always) use critical thinking and develop innovative ideas to solve problems; 72.1% responded that they almost always solve interpersonal/personal problems; 78.2% encourage/motivate the team (always/almost always). Care management: planning and prioritizing the patient’s needs predominates in 76.9% (always) and the lowest value was 21.1% for team leadership; 45.6% execute evidence-based interventions (always), and 63.3% use different resources efficiently. More than 90% have effective communication. Conclusion: The profile continues to be highly feminized and precarious in training in relation to all the activities they perform. In relation to competencies, a medium and high score is observed in all dimensions, reinforcing the criticism already mentioned of the poor working conditions in which professionals work.
