- Title
E. Y. Mullins' Neglected Theological Foundation for Church-State Separation.
- Authors
Stratton, David M.
- Abstract
The article discusses the views of Southern Baptist theologian E. Y. Mullins regarding the notion of soul competency or soul freedom as a description of the human relationship with God in relation to his advocacy for separation of church and state. It is said that more recent U.S. Baptists have instead often defended the notion of religious liberty while rejecting church-state separation. Also noted are Mullins's 1923 sermon "The Baptist Conception of Religious Liberty," his book "The Axioms of Religion," and biblical aspects of a defense for church-state separation.
