- Abstract
The article discusses the challenges posed by the U.S. Civil War of 1861-1865 to the missionary efforts of Southern Baptists in Nigeria. Among the challenges faced by Baptists in Nigeria are hostile climate and health hazards, threat of Islam and the Yoruba Civil Wars. It cites the slow growth for Baptist's mission in the country as a result of the U.S. Civil War. It explains the role played by R. H. Stone as Baptist leaders during the time when Southern Baptists had no missionaries in Nigeria from 1868 to 1874.
