- Authors
PALMER, ALEX
- Abstract
The article discusses the politics of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. It describes the current economic condition of Venezuela, and states that the heavy impact of the global financial crisis on the country's oil-dependent economy has forced Chávez to decrease his spending on social programs. It discusses Chávez's widespread media presence and notes his efforts to curtail media freedom, such as his recent orders to shut down pro-opposition television channel RCTV. The author states that despite the disenchantment of Venezuelans with Chávez, the opposition party lacks clear leadership.
