- Abstract
In view of the massive proliferation of social media networks and their obvious impact on the tendency of many media agencies to use them in their news paper sites, this study examines these networks through measuring a sample of newspapers in five Arab countries, namely Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Egypt, by analyzing two online newspapers in each of these countries to identify the extent of their use of social media networks on one hand, and the applications of the second generation of the web (Web 2.0), on the other. Field-based analysis on the World Wide Web has confirmed that there is a relationship between Arab electronic newspapers and social media networks as they use many of their characteristics but without adequate care. It was also noticed that the community sample deals with four sites of social media networks at the highest scale and three sites at the lowest scale. In addition, the most accessible social media networks in these Arabic newspaper sites were Facebook and Twitter. The sample examination results highlighted the most commonly used social media networks in the Arabic newspapers. As for the use of the applications of the second generation web (Web 2.0) in Arabic newspapers, it was found that Egyptian AlAhram newspaper occupied the top rank in providing digital services as it offered five types of these digital services out of 8 available services, whereas Kuwaiti Alwatan and Alshahed as wellas Lebanese Annahar newspapers came at the bottom of the list with respect to digital services as they provided only one digital service. With regards to the interactive possibilities on Arabic newspaper sites and their link with the applications of the second generation web (Web 2.0), it was noticed that all newspapers sites in the study sample allow printing, adding a comment, or sharing the articles on the web. The study concluded by suggesting a number of recommendations and future studies.
